Ask Mom & Spawn: How To Deal With My Bigoted Future Mother-In-Law?

no-hate-2019922_960_720

How Can I Marry Into SUCH A Bigoted Family?

“I’ve been with my fiancé since we were 16 and 17, and we are now 21 and 22. We’ve been engaged for a year, but his mother and one of his sisters hate me, all because of my skin color. My fiancé is American and I’m Spanish-American. His mother and sister hate me so much that his sister accused me of bringing drugs to the house when I was 17 and has even encouraged him to cheat on me with a waitress, all because she was white. His mother has also told him that I am a gold digger, even though I’ve never shown interest in his money. Should I confront them, or just let it go?” -Jenny

@KateFriedmanSiegel: Wow. That’s some intolerant-ass, incredibly messed up shit. I’m really sorry you’re going through that, Jenny.

@CrazyJewishMom: You should set his disgusting family’s house on fire.

@KateFriedmanSiegel: As hateful as these people sound, arson is still not the answer. Family can be a tough thing to overcome, but if you love this man, you guys can get through this together. I’ll give the obvious advice you’ve probably already tried: your fiancé needs to stand up for you with them, and put his foot down. He has to make it known that he loves you and that they need to respect your relationship.

@CrazyJewishMom: “ACCIDENTAL.” FIRE.

@KateFriedmanSiegel: If that doesn’t work, and you really want to be with this man, I think the best thing you can do in the face of bigotry is be the best version of yourself. It’s tough to change closed minds, but having a screaming match/ confrontation with someone who already has a (totally inappropriate and unwarranted) negative opinion of you, is only going to confirm their assumptions. Don’t give them that. When they are being vile, you be classy. It’s a lot easier said than done, but it’s the best thing you can do. And maybe over time, you will change their minds. Not that it’s at all your responsibility to do so.

@CrazyJewishMom: I’m sorry, Jenny. You’re a saint for not stabbing these women in the face.
